Track nearly 40 active wildfires, including large Durkee Fire

Nearly one million acres have burned in Oregon due to 38 large wildfires that are currently uncontrolled across the state. Most of the fires have been massive grass fires on the east side of Oregon, totaling 950,000 acres burned statewide – the most since 2020. The state’s wildfire forecast is expected to improve somewhat over the next week, especially in western Oregon, due to cooler weather, higher humidity, and no forecasted thunderstorms. However, the situation on the east side of the state remains challenging with dry conditions and occasional breezy weather. The Durkee Fire, one of the largest wildfires in the U.S., has burned 270,000 acres and is currently 0% contained. Storms with close to 3,000 lightning strikes have caused unpredictable fire activity in the area. The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 84 from Pendleton to Ontario due to the fire activity, and travelers should not plan to use that route. Air quality remains good across western Oregon, while central and eastern Oregon may experience moderate air quality. An air quality alert is in place for certain areas in Oregon. Smoke is expected to be pushed into central and eastern Oregon due to westerly winds.
