Jamaica Prepares for Category 4 Hurricane Beryl as Grenada Suffers Devastating Damage

Hurricane Beryl is rapidly approaching Jamaica as a Category 4 storm with winds reaching up to 145mph after causing devastation in Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Officials in Jamaica have declared a disaster area and imposed a curfew ahead of the storm. The storm is expected to impact the Cayman Islands and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula before possibly hitting southern Texas and Louisiana over the weekend.

The storm has already left a trail of destruction in its path, including the loss of several lives and significant damage to Grenada. Officials have warned of the “life-threatening” conditions that Jamaica will face within hours as the storm makes landfall.

Jamaican officials have emphasized the significant role of climate change in the intensification of Hurricane Beryl. The Alliance of Small Island States has also issued a statement highlighting the impact of rising sea temperatures and the urgent need for increased climate action.

In preparation for the storm, the US National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch for the Yucatan Peninsula, while Mexico has deployed its army, air force, and national guard to respond to the emergency. Meanwhile, hundreds of residents from southern Florida have evacuated Jamaica to seek safety in anticipation of Hurricane Beryl’s arrival.
